Pradeepta Ratnojjwala Kundalaya
Sphuran Mahapannaga Bhooshanayai
Shivanvithaayai Cha Shivanvithaayai
Namah Shivaayaicha Namah Shivayai
Salutations to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati merged in unity. One ornamented by snakes and the other by jewellery. Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are the united aspect of the supreme. This is the Ardhanareeshwar aspect as described in a prayer by Adi Shankaracharya. This is the energy that graces the 2 Mukhi Rudraksha.
As per mythology, there was a demon named ADI who could change his form at will. To entice Shiva he approached him in the form of Parvati. Lord Shiva the all-seeing God recognized this deceit and killed him. However Goddess Parvati was furious to see another woman with Shiva. She cursed Nandi his gatekeeper to turn into a stone idol. Parvati’s fury knew no bounds. Lord Brahma decided to intervene and took away her dark, furious form (Kali). Parvati then took on a poised golden form called as Gauri. Lord Brahma then blessed her that your form will merge with your husband’s form so closely that nobody would ever separate both of you. This is how the Ardhanareeshwar form was first eulogized.
